Ask Dr. Marie

After a lifetime in the medical field, first as a nurse and then as a physician, I’ve found myself wanting to re-engage with the medical philosophies I hold dear. I’d like to use this space to explore neglected topics, dispel stigma, and create agency within you, the patient!

Medication Minimalism

Modern medicine, the marvel that it is, has become a web of prescriptions, a  mountain of pills and a whole lot of blind trust. As you wade around my blog you will see that I champion medications; they save lives. Yet there comes a time especially as we age when we must ask ourselves do I need to be taking all of these ? Is it safe to take so many pills? Am I treating issues that need active attention, do I understand what I am putting into my body?

Medication minimalism, a concept always dear to me in my practice, is just what it sounds like: taking only those pills that are safe and effective, a spring cleaning of the pill box if you will. Taking the time to evaluate if you are treating what matters. Often I see patients and their loved ones blindly accept a prescription without a second thought. I’d like to use this platform to empower patients and loved ones to understand what they are taking and cut out what is not absolutely essential!
